School Dress Code

There is little doubt that a school is judged by the local community on the extent to its pupils identify with their school through their conduct, through their involvement in school activities and also through their dress.

SBC and Earlston High School believe that there are many advantages in having a clear dress code.

These advantages include:

  • Encouraging a sense of belonging and pride in the school
  • Encouraging a purposeful attitude to school work and extra curricular activities
  • Enhancing the image of the school
  • Discouraging competition between pupils
  • Discouraging bullying and victimisation which may arise from pupils not having certain clothing
  • Improving safety in the classroom and in practical areas such as science labs.
  • Improving school security through easy identification of intruders
  • Improving security on excursions through the easy identification of pupils
  • Preparing pupils for employment situation where a corporate company image exists.

After a lengthy consultation exercise, involving pupils, parents and the wider community, a new school dress code was voted for in May 2009. The new code is outlined below:

Pupils should wear

S1-S4
White shirt or Blouse (with collar)
Black trousers or skirt
Black V-neck jumper, cardigan or tank top
Black shoes (not trainers)

Any parent who has difficulty in supporting the guidelines should write to the school.

If a pupil has difficulty in meeting the guidelines on any day he/she must report to the office before period 1, with a note from home to explain the difficulty. Pupils who have not adhered to the school dress code will remain on the school campus at lunchtime.

School ties are available from the school office. Black jumpers, cardigans and tank tops are also available to order.

Financial Help with School Clothing:

In certain circumstances, families can receive assistance to buy school clothes. An application form can be obtained from the school or Council Headquarters.

Kit for P.E.

The emphasis at Earlston High School is on participation and so there is no specific kit required for PE. However, pupils should have clothing which is appropriate to the activity and no clothing which promotes cigarettes or alcohol can be worn. The list below is the required kit for pupils when they represent the school at rugby or hockey.

Girls

Emerald green hockey top
Navy blue skirt
Navy blue hoodie
Navy/emerald green knee length socks
Training shoes or hockey boots

The above hockey kit can only be purchased from the PE dept. In May each year, order forms are sent to the feeder primaries.

Boys

Black rugby shorts
Royal blue rugby shirt
Royal blue rugby socks
Training shoes or rugby
boots

Rugby kit is available from ‘The Trophy Guy’ in Galashiels.
S3-S6 rugby tops are available from Mr Renwick.
