Instrumental Instruction

Tuition on certain musical instruments is available for pupils who have sufficient ability and who are keen to learn to play a musical instrument. This is done by arrangement with the Principal Teacher of Music. A charge is now made for music tuition, except for pupils following a certificated course in music.

Religious Education

One period per week is allocated to Religious Education on the timetables of all pupils in Year 1, 3 and 4. Year 2 pupils have 2 periods per week on their timetables. Courses in Religious Education cover the study of the main Religions of the World. If a family has a religion which does not allow children to have Religious Education, the parent should write to ask for his/her children to be excused from these classes.

Church Services

On the last day of term at Christmas and Easter, pupils and staff attend a service in Earlston Parish Church conducted by the school chaplain. Representatives from other Churches in our area often assist at the services. The experience of attending a church service is seen as part of the education provided by the school.

Assemblies

Pupils will attend several assemblies each session. These are usually taken by a member of the Senior Management Team and sometimes include a visiting speaker. Some assemblies have a religious content which can include prayers taken by our Chaplain or other visitors.

Transport

Pupils attending a secondary school are eligible for free travel provided their home is more than three miles from the school. They may travel on special buses or they may be given a pass to use on public transport. Some pupils who live less than three miles from the school may be granted "privilege" places on contract buses not fully occupied by qualifying passengers. Parents moving into the area may contact School Transport Office at Regional Headquarters or the Rector if transport arrangements have to be made for their children.

New S1 pupils receive bus passes by post during the summer holiday.

Catering Service

Scottish Borders Council operates a cafeteria service in the school refectory from 8.30 - 3.00pm. There is a wide range of choice and a cashless payment system is in operation.

Free Meals : Some pupils are entitled to free meals. Information and a form of application are available from the school office, or the Education Department, Newtown St. Boswells.

Pupils who bring packed lunches are welcome to use the refectory.
